Role at a Glance

People manager role leading Remote's APAC Lifecycle Contracts team — covering India, Southeast Asia, and Japan. You're the regional authority on employment contracts and local labor compliance, responsible for growing the team and tightening its processes. Fully remote, async-first. Salary: $48,850–$110,000 USD (geo-adjusted). Reports to Senior Manager, Lifecycle Contract Management.

What This Role Is Actually About

Remote is scaling its Lifecycle Operations function and needs a dedicated manager to own employment contract operations across the APAC region. Day to day that means acting as the go-to expert when contract or labor-law questions escalate, coaching a regional team, and steadily raising the quality and efficiency of the processes they run. The position sits within the EOR Operations org, spans multiple APAC jurisdictions, and expects you to be comfortable building new capabilities — not just maintaining existing ones.

About Remote

Remote builds the legal and operational infrastructure that lets companies hire employees compliantly in countries where they have no legal entity of their own. The platform supports compliant employment across 80+ countries, and the team behind it is itself globally distributed — spanning six continents and operating on a fully async model with no fixed headquarters. The Lifecycle Operations team is central to that delivery: they navigate multi-country employment contracts, automate compliance workflows, and manage the ongoing employment changes that arise once someone is on a company's payroll through Remote.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the regional authority on employment contract matters — the escalation point for complex questions across the APAC team and its cross-functional partners
  • Coach and develop direct reports, identifying growth paths and closing skill gaps to build a consistently high-performing team
  • Own the full talent pipeline for the regional team: recruiting, onboarding, training, mentoring, and day-to-day performance supervision
  • Collaborate across Operations, Product, Engineering, Legal, and Customer Success to sharpen contract workflows, integrations, and standard operating procedures
  • Drive continuous improvement — identify bottlenecks, implement automation opportunities, and scale team capacity without proportionally scaling headcount
  • Build new regional capabilities from the ground up: scope, launch, iterate, and transition to steady-state operations
  • Champion Remote's values and the Lifecycle team's mission in both internal forums and external-facing contexts

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Multi-country APAC HR Operations experience with hands-on depth in employment contracts and local labor law — not just exposure to these topics
  • Demonstrated history of scaling or managing an HR Operations function across diverse APAC markets, including direct navigation of local compliance requirements
  • Hands-on people management experience with a coaching approach — you have actively developed direct reports, not just supervised output
  • Fluent written and spoken English
  • Background in fast-paced, international, or scale-up organizations
  • Comfort in a service-level environment with an explicit focus on quality metrics and continuous improvement
  • Proficiency across digital tools — you adopt new platforms readily and push for tech-enabled efficiency
  • Strong data stewardship habits — proven ability to handle sensitive employee records with confidentiality and strict professionalism

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience at a startup or high-growth company
  • Previous experience working in a fully remote or distributed-team environment

Skills Breakdown: Must-Have vs. Nice-to-Have

The non-negotiables are multi-jurisdiction APAC HR operations, employment contract expertise, and direct people leadership. You need to have personally navigated local labor law in at least one APAC market — not just overseen someone who did. The coaching mindset requirement signals this team is being actively developed, so supervisory experience alone won't be sufficient. Tech fluency is a baseline expectation; Remote is automation-forward and expects managers to push for tooling efficiency. Startup and remote-work backgrounds are genuinely optional — useful for shortening your ramp, not prerequisite filters.

The company states it aims to pay above in-location market rates everywhere it operates. Base salary is complemented by equity in the form of stock options.
