Role at a Glance
A certified medical coder opening at Brellium, an AI-powered clinical compliance startup. You'll code and audit outpatient behavioral health encounters, channel expertise into an automated coding platform, and help build internal standards that scale across 250,000+ providers. Fully remote. Requires CPC or CPC-A certification plus 2+ years of outpatient coding experience. Pay: $22–32/hr.
About This Role
Brellium is bringing on a Medical Coding Specialist to work at the crossroads of clinical documentation and AI-driven compliance technology. Fully remote, this position puts you in charge of the full audit cycle for outpatient encounters — verifying that code selections are grounded in the clinical record, identifying documentation shortfalls, and translating that expertise into measurable improvements in Brellium's automated coding engine. You'll collaborate closely with senior coders and cross-functional partners across Customer Success, Product, and Engineering, giving you genuine influence over how human-in-the-loop coding evolves as the platform scales.
About Brellium
Brellium is a health-tech startup working to reduce preventable clinical and compliance errors across U.S. healthcare — a problem that currently touches roughly one in twenty patients each year. Their core product is a real-time AI review platform that surfaces clinical and compliance risks before they affect patient outcomes or create financial liability for providers. Founded in 2021, the company has expanded quickly and now supports more than 250,000 providers across all fifty states. Brellium has raised over $30 million in a Series A round from First Round Capital, Left Lane Capital, and Menlo Ventures.
What You'll Be Doing
- Review outpatient encounter records and confirm that CPT codes, ICD-10-CM diagnoses, and E/M levels are substantiated by the underlying clinical documentation
- Identify and flag cases where the documented clinical evidence does not support the billed service level
- Escalate ambiguous or complex encounters with clear written rationale to help evolve internal coding guidelines over time
- Deliver structured feedback on the automated coding engine — surfacing edge cases, false positives, and coverage gaps the platform should address
- Contribute to QA reviews, calibration sessions, and the development of training materials and coding playbooks as the program grows
Must-Have Qualifications
- Active CPC-A or CPC certification from AAPC
- At least 2 years of hands-on experience in medical coding or revenue cycle management
- Outpatient coding background in behavioral health or psychiatry, including E/M level selection using both MDM and time-based methods
- High accuracy and sound judgment when evaluating whether clinical documentation supports a given code
- Prior experience collaborating directly with physicians, therapists, or other clinical stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
- One or more additional AAPC or AHIMA credentials — CPMA, CEMC, CFPC, CCC, CANPC, CCS-P, or CPB
- Experience mentoring, training, or calibrating fellow coders on documentation standards and code selection
- Familiarity with end-to-end revenue cycle management and medical billing workflows
- Comfort communicating coding decisions clearly to clinicians, billing teams, and operational leaders
- A process-improvement orientation — interest in building scalable coding systems, not just clearing a queue
- Enthusiasm for applying medical coding expertise within a technology-driven product environment
Skills Snapshot: Required vs. Preferred
The non-negotiable core is behavioral health outpatient coding — specifically E/M level selection under both MDM and time-based frameworks — anchored by CPC or CPC-A certification. CPT and ICD-10-CM fluency are table stakes at this level. Preferred depth includes specialty credentials such as CPMA, CEMC, or CCS-P, and experience running coder-calibration programs. At a mid-level seniority band (2+ years required, no ceiling stated), Brellium is prioritizing specialty depth over general coding volume, with an added premium on candidates comfortable influencing automated technology systems rather than simply processing encounter queues.
Pay & Compensation
The employer has listed an hourly rate of $22 to $32 — the only compensation figure disclosed in this posting. No benefits, bonus structure, equity, or additional perks are detailed. Because the role is remote with no geographic pay-band restrictions mentioned, the published range should apply U.S.-wide. Whether this position is full-time or part-time is not specified; candidates should confirm expected weekly hours and total package details directly with Brellium before accepting an offer.
Location & Work Model
This is a fully remote position. Brellium is headquartered in New York City, but the role is explicitly designated as remote-eligible — relocation is not required. Visa sponsorship availability is not addressed anywhere in the job posting. Candidates outside the NYC metro should confirm remote eligibility and any state-specific employment conditions with Brellium's recruiting team during the hiring process.
