What This Role Is
This hourly Security Guard position sits at the intersection of physical security and customer service at ADESA's Clayton auction facility. You'll control who and what enters or leaves the property, log vehicle data using a handheld device, patrol the grounds, and serve as the first point of contact for customers, vendors, and transporters at the gate. It's a role that rewards someone equally comfortable with security protocols and a calm, professional demeanor under pressure. The position is hourly, reports to the Operations manager or a designated site leader, and involves rotating shifts that may include weekends.
About ADESA and Carvana
ADESA is a wholesale vehicle remarketing and auction business with more than 50 US locations, now part of Carvana's broader automotive ecosystem. Sites vary considerably in scale — some span close to 200 acres — and the services range from vehicle inspection and reconditioning to wholesale auction remarketing and distribution hub operations. Inventory across the network reaches into the hundreds of thousands of vehicles, covering retail, commercial, and OEM channels across North America. The company is in an active growth phase, with planned facility investment and expanding inventory, and it operates with a stated emphasis on team-oriented collaboration rather than individual performance.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Control access at all gates and building entry points by verifying authorization for people and vehicles entering or leaving the property
- Conduct regular patrols across the facility grounds, buildings, and perimeter
- Inspect outbound vehicles to confirm no unauthorized removal of company property
- Use a handheld device to record vehicle information — VIN numbers, mileage, owner identification, vehicle options, and repair orders
- Cross-check entered VINs against the shipper's Bill of Lading documents to confirm accuracy
- Greet and assist customers, vendors, and transporters at the gate with directions and courteous service
- De-escalate tense or difficult interactions with customers and partners in a calm, professional manner
- Identify and report safety or maintenance concerns — unsecured doors, fire hazards, water leaks, or equipment issues
- Activate alarms and contact emergency services when warranted by developing situations
- Track and account for keys, access codes, and other security credentials
- Maintain an up-to-date list of emergency contacts and management phone numbers
- Communicate proactively with teammates and site leadership throughout each shift
Must-Have Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age

- Demonstrated ability to handle conflict or tense situations constructively and professionally
- Strong attention to detail, particularly in data accuracy and documentation tasks
- Comfort managing multiple responsibilities simultaneously in a high-traffic, fast-paced setting

Skills That Actually Matter for This Role
The non-negotiable requirements here are practical and physical: reliable attendance, outdoor work readiness, the ability to drive multiple vehicle types, and accurate data entry on a handheld device. Notably, the posting does not require a security license or prior guard experience — making this a realistic entry point for candidates transitioning from customer service, warehouse, retail, or logistics work. What will differentiate strong applicants is the combination of precise documentation habits and calm conflict management. The VIN verification process has zero tolerance for data errors, and gate interactions can become confrontational. Candidates with experience in transportation, hospitality, or any role requiring both accuracy and public-facing composure will translate well here.
