Role at a Glance
Experience required: 6–10 years. Primary language: Go (strongly preferred). Degree: Bachelor's or Master's in CS or Engineering. Salary range: $165,000–$242,000 base. Offices: Livingston NJ, New York NY, Sunnyvale CA, San Francisco CA, Bellevue WA. Scope: owns both NFS file and native block storage data paths and control plane for petabyte-scale AI workloads at a publicly traded cloud infrastructure company.
What This Role Is About
This position places you at the center of CoreWeave's storage infrastructure: owning both the data path and the control plane for high-performance, multi-tenant file and block storage that underpins the largest AI training and inference workloads on the platform. Concretely, that means keeping NFS hot-path performance tight for IOPS-heavy AI pipelines, standing up a native block storage service from the ground up, and surfacing both as first-class Kubernetes services via a shared CSI driver. You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with compute, platform, and infrastructure teams — with a direct line to customer-facing capabilities that unlock petabyte-scale enterprise deals.
About CoreWeave
CoreWeave is a cloud provider built from the ground up for GPU-intensive AI workloads. Founded in 2017 and listed on Nasdaq (ticker: CRWV) in March 2025, it serves leading AI research labs, high-growth startups, and large enterprises that need more than what general-purpose hyperscalers offer. The company's differentiator is purpose-built infrastructure and deep systems-level expertise tuned specifically for AI model training and inference — not a general-purpose cloud that added GPUs. The team operates at hyper-growth pace with a stated culture of curiosity, ownership, and moving fast.
What You'll Own
- Own NFS hot-path reliability, IO resilience, and performance — including the small-file and IOPS-heavy access patterns that AI training pipelines require and the sustained throughput that keeps GPUs saturated
- Design and build a native block storage service — durable, high-performance block volumes for both customer workloads and internal stateful services, running on shared storage hardware alongside the file tier
- Ship a backend-neutral CSI driver that exposes both file and block as first-class Kubernetes citizens — covering dynamic provisioning, volume resize, snapshots, and RWO block volumes, backed by a public provisioning SLO
- Build and operate the storage control plane: multi-tenant isolation, quota enforcement, QoS, snapshot lifecycle, BYOK key management, audit trails, and HIPAA-grade controls that unlock regulated enterprise customers
- Instrument the full storage stack with telemetry, metrics, and dashboards; partner with operations to drive down latency and improve durability and resilience under production load
- Collaborate with platform, product, and infrastructure teams to enable transparent data tiering from hot storage to lower-cost object storage without breaking access semantics
- Work with high-performance interconnect and storage technologies including RDMA, GPUDirect Storage, RoCE, InfiniBand, and SPDK to push throughput and latency boundaries
- Mentor peers on distributed, high-performance systems design and raise the team's engineering bar
Must-Have Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field
- 6–10 years of production experience building storage systems, distributed systems, or large-scale infrastructure services
- Hands-on production depth in distributed or networked file systems (NFS/POSIX semantics at scale) and/or block volume services covering durability, snapshots, and replication
- Strong command of the storage data path: IO performance, caching strategies, small-file and metadata-heavy workload behavior, crash consistency guarantees, and resilience under load
- Experience designing or operating multi-tenant storage control planes — provisioning workflows, tenancy and quota systems, and data-protection features such as snapshots, encryption in transit, and key management
- Systems programming proficiency in Go (strongly preferred); C or Rust is a meaningful differentiator
- Kubernetes depth including custom controllers, operators, CRDs, and CSI with dynamic provisioning, volume resize, snapshots, and ReadWriteOnce block volumes
- Familiarity with distributed databases (e.g., CockroachDB), workflow orchestration (e.g., Temporal), and gRPC/Protobuf API design
- Strong debugging instincts and structured problem-solving skills in distributed, high-performance environments
- Clear written and verbal communicator comfortable sharing technical context across compute, platform, and product teams
Nice-to-Have Experience
- Prior hands-on work with distributed or parallel storage stacks such as Ceph/RBD, Lustre, GPFS/Spectrum Scale, BeeGFS, WEKA, VAST, or DAOS
- Familiarity with storage observability tooling and telemetry pipelines — ClickHouse, Prometheus, and Grafana in particular
- Exposure to high-performance data-path technologies: RDMA, GPUDirect Storage, RoCE, InfiniBand, or SPDK
Skills Breakdown: Required vs. Advantageous
The non-negotiable core is Go proficiency combined with production-grade NFS and/or block storage experience, plus solid Kubernetes depth (CSI, CRDs, operators). The control-plane dimension — multi-tenancy, BYOK encryption, HIPAA-grade audit — is equally required; this is not a pure data-path role. Distributed database familiarity (CockroachDB, Temporal) and gRPC/Protobuf are stated requirements, not bonuses. RDMA/GPUDirect and prior Ceph/Lustre/WEKA experience are the optional layer — useful additions the team can teach. At 6–10 years, independent ownership plus active mentorship is expected.
